Skaftafell National Park

From Jökulsárlón we started driving west to eventually reach the Skaftafell National Park which is located just a 40 minute car ride away.

The Skaftafell National Park is known for its amazing hikes and gletsjer tours which can be done in a day trip our cover several days.

A very popular tour through the Skaftafell National Park would be the Glacier Grand Slam tour which includes a glacier hiking up the Fjallsárjökul glacier tongue which is really intense but will literally take your breath away.

You could also decide to book a tour which includes this Fjallsárjökul glacier hike and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon boat ride but considering the fact that we had already been in Jökulsárlón we were just interested in visiting the Fjallsárjökul glacier.

The day tour starts early in the morning at the Service Terminal in Skaftafell from where you will be picked up for a drive along the south coast.

The Skaftafell National Park is part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park and you really can't miss a tour or drive through this part of Iceland when you're going there.

Vacation in Skaftafell National Park

The most spectacular feature of the Vatnajökull National Park tour would have been the walk through the gletsjer tunnel which was really nice. My second favourite would have been the Svartifoss Waterfalls, a popular site within the Skaftafell National Park which is also known as the Black Fall because of teh surrounding dark lava columns.

After our visit to the Skaftafell National Park we continued driving west along the southern coast of Iceland heading for Vik, the southernmost village in Iceland and famous for its large population of puffins home to beautiful Black Beach and Skogafoss where we visited the Skogafoss Waterfalls.
