Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan and situated in the western part of the country, near the border with Uzbekistan. Dushanbe is also the commercial hub of Tajikistan and walking around in the city makes you forget how poor this country actually is. Compared to other regions of Tajikistan you will see a more developed city centre with shopping malls, nice shops and beautiful fountains. Of course, like in other big cities, the areas just out of the centre are the poorest and eventough the city centre would make you question weather life is treating people better in Dushanbe most of them live an every day struggle as well. Rudaki Avenue is the city's main street and packed with beautiful buildings like the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Tajik Academy of Sciences, the National Library and the several embassies. Besides all these buildings you will also find the Monument of Ismail Samani, who is considered the father of the Tajik nation, on Rudik Avenue. We also visited the Haji Yakoub Mosque, the Orthodox Church and the local market. It's funny to mention that Dushanbe in Tajik means Monday and was named after the place where the city was built, a site of a popular Monday marketplace. The markets are a great place to meet locals and purchase some fresh local produce. Especially the dried fruit and nuts are delicious!
