Medellin is known as one of the most dangerous places in Colombia but if you want to escape all that hectic city life you could easily take a weekend break from Medellin and head to a more peaceful destination. I spent the last three months in Medellin where I wrote my MA Thesis and there were time I desperately felt the need to escape the city so when I found out about El Penon de Guatape, I'd found my own little peace of paradise away from the big city.  Travel Guide GuatapeEl Penon de Guatape is the name of the Rock of Guatape, a small town at a 80 km bus ride from Medellin. The best thing about Guatape is that rock and once you've climbed it you know why! The view from El Penon de Guatape is amazing and you will be able to take some stunning pictures of the surrounding lake. The view from right next to the Madonna is breath taking and will definitely help you enjoy that weekend break!
